A JOURNAL SINCE 2005
5561
Named after the number of the house where I grew up in Chile. Personal stories, travel, product and AI, books, and a thank-you to every year since 2013.
Welcome to 5561CL
I went online back in 2005 to explore the exciting and ‘new’ world of blogs. What it started like a personal journal is now a full fletched website that I mainly use for professional purposes.
However, in 5561CL -the number of the house where I grew up in, back in Chile - I speak about more personal things, from my ‘thanks [insert year] series, to my travels around the world and certainly, some explorations around fintech, product management, real states or economics, all topics I’m very fond of.
With that being said, welcome to 5561CL a blog that contains personal stories dating back 2013, the year I moved to Milan to pursue my MBA
The power of (great) branding: Roots of Fight
It is not common to find apparel brands that escalate as fast as Roots of Fight. In little over 5 years, the company has grown fast enough to build a niche and create its own path, building an aspirational, motivational and solid brand.
¿Qué hace una cafetería exitosa? Parte 2
What is it like to work for the sharing economy?
Hands down, one my all time favourite podcasts is Benjamin's Walker Theory of Everything. He is constantly telling compelling stories that keeps me coming back. However, the last "triad" was specially provoking.
Islamic Finances and Greece
The last couple of weeks, I have been reading 2 really good books. Shantaram and Heaven's Bankers: Inside the Hidden World of Islamic Finance. The last one has been such a huge learning to me. Basically, islamic finances transforms the relationship between lender and borrower into a investor - manager one, in which the risk is shared and making money out o thin air is haram (not permitted).
Since 2000 the US, UK and even Spain have improved their economy. Spain is a quite special case; they hit rock bottom in 2008, however their economy has grown stronger in the last 7 years. Germany and France also have gotten stronger the last couple of years. But Italy (and Greece) actually went back and shrank its economy again.
EU essay: low engagement
For the last two elections, the low participation of people has been quite low when it comes to voting for the European Elections. Some think this could be solved through penalizing those who do not vote, but that might be equal to putting a casket on a broken leg after falling off a bike. The real problem is that you don't know how to ride the bike, meaning next time, chances of getting hurt are at high stake.
Participation in the EU elections has been constantly decreasing from 62% in 1979 to 43% in 2009 (Source CEPS). It seems as every year, election goes down 3%. It is important to notice though, that Europe it is not the only place with low rates of voting. The US has a hard time and countries all over LATAM have it as well (in Chile, abstention for 2013 presidential election was an all time high of 60%; source: U de Chile Radio)
The Circular Economy
Two weeks ago, I joined The Ellen MacArthur Foundation on a MOOC created especially for executive education. I met them personally while doing my MBA in Italy. They are moving worldwide to create awareness on the importance of Circular Economy.
Since I love the subject, I thought about sharing my thought after 2 weeks of classes.
Make it pretty, bhaiya
This post has been originally written for the Energy & Sustainability Club of MIP's Business School in Italy.
The past.
David Ricardo could not have said it better: countries have a comparative advantage over other countries in certain areas. Wether it is coffee, copper, steel or cacao, each country “should” have a surplus, given its highly specialized labor force and its ability to produce more, better and cheaper products.
The social innovation in India
There is one class that keeps my unadulterated attention every single week.
I look forward to go back to the classroom and learn from one of the very best professors I have ever have. His name is Suchil Kumar and the class I'm talking about is Social Entrepreneurship.
UPDATE: Since "sharing is caring" I have uploaded my notes on the class.
